CRIME: Violent crimes, including rape and murder, do occur. Robberies and assaults have affected visitors as well as students studying in Antigua. In February 2014, a group of five tourists, including three Americans, were robbed by four masked assailants, one of whom was armed, according to media reports. Take precautions to ensure your safety when travelling around the island as well as in your residence or hotel. Always avoid visiting isolated beaches alone and do not leave valuables unattended. Be alert and maintain the same level of personal security you would use visiting major U.S. cities.

Be especially vigilant when taking taxis in Antigua and Barbuda. Make certain that the taxi driver is licensed and is a member of the official taxi association. Unlicensed taxi operators have been known to extort money from passengers, despite having agreed to a fare beforehand. This can sometimes amount to double or triple the agreed-upon fare.

VICTIMS OF CRIME: If you or someone you know becomes the victim of a crime abroad, you should contact the local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  We can:

  • Replace a stolen passport.
  • Help you find appropriate medical care if you are the victim of violent crimes such as assault or rape.
  • Put you in contact with the appropriate police authorities, and if you want us to, contact family members or friends.
  • Help you understand the local criminal justice process and direct you to local attorneys, although it is important to remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

The local equivalent to the “911” emergency line in Antigua and Barbuda is 999 or 911 (either number will work).

Please see our information for victims of crime, including possible victim compensation programs in the United States.
