Do US citizens need to pay anything to visit New Zealand?

Yes -- even though no traditional visa is required, US citizens must obtain the NZeTA (electronic travel authority) and pay the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy), both required together. Check immigration.govt.nz for the exact current fee amounts.
