Do U.S. citizens need a visa for Uzbekistan?

Most do. Uzbekistan only waives the visa requirement for U.S. citizens aged 55 or older (tourism, up to 30 days), children under 16 traveling with a guardian who holds a visa, and travelers transiting through Uzbekistan's airports for five days or less on Uzbekistan Airways tickets. Everyone else needs an e-Visa or a consular visa.

How much does the Uzbekistan e-Visa cost?

The e-Visa applied for online at e-visa.gov.uz costs $20 for a single entry, $35 for a double entry, or $50 for multiple entries — this is the route almost all U.S. travelers should use. A separate, more expensive paper visa processed by mail through the Uzbekistan Embassy in Washington, D.C. also exists, but the online e-Visa is cheaper and faster for most travelers.

How long does e-Visa processing take, and how long is it valid?

Standard e-Visa processing takes about 2-3 business days, with a VIP option available for roughly 1-hour turnaround if you are traveling on short notice. Once issued, the e-Visa is valid for entry within 90 days of issuance and permits a stay of up to 30 days per entry.

Do I need to register while in Uzbekistan?

Yes, but hotels handle it for you. All foreign visitors staying more than three days must be registered with local authorities, and hotels automatically register their guests at check-in. If you are staying with private hosts, you are responsible for registering yourself with the local Administration for Migration and Citizenship.

Are there currency rules I should know about before I land?

Yes. You must declare cash on arrival if you are carrying more than the equivalent of about $8,400, and on departure you cannot leave with more currency than what you originally declared. Fill out the customs declaration form on entry and keep it until you leave.

Uzbekistan Entry/Exit General Information

Before you travel, make sure your U.S. passport has at least three months of validity remaining beyond your planned departure date from Uzbekistan and at least one blank page. Most American travelers under 55 will need to apply for a visa in advance; the simplest and cheapest route is the official e-Visa portal at e-visa.gov.uz, where you fill out an online application, upload a passport photo and passport bio page, and pay by card. Once you are in the country, registration is largely automatic if you are staying in hotels: properties register their foreign guests with local authorities as part of check-in, and stays of three days or less do not require registration at all. Uzbekistan also enforces a currency declaration rule that catches some travelers off guard: if you are bringing in cash equivalent to roughly $8,400 or more, you must declare it in writing on arrival, and you are not permitted to leave the country with more cash than what you declared coming in.
