Do U.S. citizens need a visa to visit Tanzania?

Yes. All U.S. citizens need a visa to enter Tanzania for any purpose, including tourism. Unlike many other nationalities, U.S. citizens cannot get a visa on arrival — it must be obtained online in advance through Tanzania's official e-Visa portal.

How much is the Tanzania e-Visa for U.S. citizens?

U.S. citizens are required to apply for the Multiple-Entry Visa, which costs $100, rather than the standard $50 single-entry visa available to most other nationalities. Can U.S. citizens use the East Africa Tourist Visa to visit Tanzania?

No. The East Africa Tourist Visa is a shared visa covering only Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda — Tanzania does not participate. If your trip includes Tanzania alongside any of those three countries, you will need a separate Tanzania e-Visa.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine to enter Tanzania?

Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only for travelers arriving from, or who have transited more than 12 hours through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Flying directly from the United States generally will not trigger this requirement, but carrying a certificate is still a good precaution.

How much cash can I bring into Tanzania before I have to declare it?

Tanzania Entry/Exit General Information

Before you travel, make sure your U.S. passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay in Tanzania and has at least one blank visa page. Immigration officials can deny boarding or entry over an expiring passport, so this is worth double-checking well ahead of your trip.

All U.S. citizens need a visa to enter Tanzania, and the process works differently than it does for many other nationalities. Tanzania has phased out visa-on-arrival, so the visa must be secured online in advance through the government's e-Visa portal at eservices.immigration.go.tz. While most nationalities can apply for a $50 single-entry tourist visa, U.S. citizens are specifically required to apply for the Multiple-Entry Visa, which costs $100, is valid for one year from issue, and allows unlimited entries during that period, though any individual stay is still capped at 90 days. Apply well before departure, since processing can take several business days, and keep in mind that Tanzania is not part of the East Africa Tourist Visa shared by Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda.
