Entry/Exit Requirements

Hungary is a party to the Schengen Agreement. Your U.S passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure. U.S. citizens may enter Hungary for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa. You need sufficient funds and a return airline ticket. For additional details about travel into and within Schengen countries please see our Schengen fact sheet.

If you are officially assigned to Hungary (both Diplomatic and Administrative/Technical Staff) and hold a valid diplomatic or official passport, you are required to obtain the appropriate entry visa prior to arrival. The same applies to all Eligible Family Members who are on official assignment orders. The appropriate visa is required in order to be eligible for a residence permit and Identification Card upon arrival, which is obtained from the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

If you would like to visit Hungary for any reason other than those listed above, or if you would like to receive a residence or work permit, please contact the Embassy of Hungary at 3910 Shoemaker Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20008, telephone (202) 362-6730. Visit the Embassy of Hungary’s website for the most current visa information. For residence permit information please visit the Hungarian Immigration Office’s website.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Hungary.
